Am I Crazy for Not Being Lazy

So I am one of those people who likes stairs and tries to avoid escalators and elevators as much as possible. I don't know why. I just realized how odd I was when I was at O'Hare and there were two escalators going up one floor and there was a huge line behind them and right next to them there was a set of stairs that was sparsely populated with 'climbers'. It was ONE floor. I chose the stairs of course but I probably would have done so anyway.

So I am curious to the 3 or 4 readers out there, what is your stair/elevator ratio? I would say that 5 floors is when I would start doing the elevator as long as they were both equally accessible. I like stairs, what can I say. I usually even avoid those moving floors in airports unless I am heavily laden with luggage. Oh well.

This is a really complicated question for me. It depends on a lot of factors, like where I am, how far it is to the stairs or the elevator, what the elevator/stairs are like...

Like, for example, I never take the elevator in a parking garage. I don't know why - I think I fear that the doors will open and there will be a murderer there and I'll have nowhere to run. I don't worry about that so much inside.

I always take the elevator up to the DIAD, though. And I take the elevator up to SI if I come in the back door, because the elevator's closer than the stairs. I take the stairs at work, which is 4 floors up.

I love those walkway things! I like walking briskly on them, so that I'm just FLYING along the corridor! Eat my dust, non-walkway people!

5 sounds about right, although it depends on the age of the building and my motivation. At my lab, the Dow Building, we have a 3-story elevator and I never take it b/c it's only 3 floors and it's pretty old and doesn't seem well maintained. I always fear that I'll get hosed and it will break down while I'm on it. We also have this huge freight elevator that it takes at least 1 minute to open and close the doors and travel 3 stories. I have to use this b/c I'm not strong enough to lift cylinders up three stories.

But I'm not surprised about the 1 floor deal. At my old job, we had 2 floors in the lab. The had an elevator - mainly for freight again. But people would regularly wait the 30 seconds for it to come to their floor rather than take about 20 stairs. I guess some people just like to waste time. Like people who don't move into the center of an intersection when the arrow disappears in a left turn lane. But I shouldn't start on that.

Related to Tony's comment but not the original post:

The other day I was in one of those situation where I was turning left without a left-turn light, but when it turned green, the guy who was sitting there waiting to go straight wouldn't go. So I started to turn, then he seemed to wake up and go through the intersection. You snooze, you lose, buddy! Then he looked mad at me. Yeah, it wasn't legal, but was I supposed to sit there all day waiting for him?

I know what you mean about the multiple criteria thing. I usually will ride in an elevator if a person I am walking with is going at any time. I always take the stairs to the DIAD. I just don't feel normal sometimes.

I love the way I get to "choose an identity" when I post a comment. Your blog is fully compatible with multiple-personality disorder.

I didn't inform anyone really. I just put links up from comments on srah, Cari and o's blogs. I don't think I hit yours in that timespan yet.

More posts coming when I have ideas and time.

Hmmm, I have a knee injury so I avoid taking stairs upwards, but if it's just 1 floor, I will climb the stairs just to stop my inner voice form mocking and insulting me. On the way down, I"ll take the stairs no matter how many floors, unless I am in a hurry or there's a fire ... I know that's wrong but it's still faster and everybody else is stuck on the stairs :-P

Yes, I think I told Rebecca too. And now I've had to tell Cari too because she wasn't paying attention to my comments on others sites. :)
